Relations between Russia, the South-East and the West of Europe (XIXth-XXth Centuries)
This topic overs the trilateral relations (from the exchange of ideas to political relations) between Russia, the South-East and the West of Europe, from 1800 to present day. By looking at the same time at these three sides of the triangle, some broad phaenomena appear vividly, that would not appear as clearly by studying only bilateral relations, e.g. Russia / the West.
In particular, the "Eastern Question" (chap. VI of the book Réinventer la tradition. Alexandre Stourdza et l´Europe de la Sainte-Alliance), which focuses all hopes of early XIXth century Europe around the independence of Greece and other countries of the area against a declining Ottoman Empire, is a major milestone in the history of the continent, both in terms of ideas and geopolitical balances.
